SEO Kept Simple by Google

How Do You Know What is Right for Search Engine Optimisation?

Dec 21, 2008 Samuel O'Prey

Understanding SEO and website optimisation can be very confusing but if you keep things simple and customer focused then your website should need little work.

There are lists of rules needed to be adhered to in order to tick all the boxes and get the perfectly optimised website. With Google having an estimated 250 plus algorithms that it uses to judge your website's worthiness you could be mistaken that it is as easy as ticking every single one of those 250 boxes to get to the top of your desired search pages.

Yes if you knew all 250 then it could be argued that you would be top ranking, but as Google changes these algorithms on almost a daily basis these days that would be virtually impossible. On top of this Google keeps its algorithms as a closely guarded secret.

Here is a short list of 10 factors that should be used, remembering there are over 250 factors to be considered these are only a fraction of what needs to be known.

1. Having keywords in the URL; the first and second words are thought to be best.

2. Keywords should also be found in the domain name with hyphens used where possible.

3. Keywords should be found in the title tag of your web page as close to the beginning as possible, here a maximum of 60 characters should be used. Between 10 and 60 is a good rule of thumb.

4. Keywords should also be found in your “description tag”, no longer used by many website designers and some SEO companies because Google no longer relies on this due to spamming and other issues. This, though, is still a valuable tool as Google might not rely on it anymore but it is reported that it does use it on a regular basis. Maximum of 200 characters should be used here.

5. Keywords should be found in the website keyword tag. Maximum 10 words. All keywords need to found somewhere on your actual page content otherwise this can be considered spam or irrelevant. Do not repeat any single word otherwise this is considered spam. Google apparently no longer uses this tag but other search engine do.

6. Keyword density in your body text should be between 5%-20% for all words although there is some subject sensitivity around this issue and different subject matters have different percentage values.

7. Individual keyword density should only be 1%-6%.

8. Keywords should be found throughout the page in H1, H2 and H3.

9. Keywords should have emphasis – bold, italics, etc.

10. Keywords should be in near proximity to each other; 2+ words directly adjacent is best.

The above may appear too technical for some but whether you are an SEO expert or just starting your own website it is good to be aware of these factors.

Google: Are they making it easier or harder to get to the top?

The simple answer is that it will never be easy to get to the top of Google because of all the spammers out there Google has had to constantly change and shift its algorithms to stay ahead of the SPAM.

Google is focused on customer experience. Since its very creation Google has always been about getting the most relevant search results for the search made. To stay the number one search engine Google needs to make sure that the user experience is the best and bringing back the most relevant search results.

Knowing this should turn a light bulb on in every search engine optimiser, e-marketer and website owners out there. If you try and emulate Google in trying to make your website the best customer experience for your product, service or information possible, with content that would be of use to the user, then Google will rate your website higher than those sites where the returned results are poor or less relevant to the search.

So when designing a website or writing website copy, make it of use to the customer, make it relevant to the products or services and you will make it relevant to Google and therefore increase your search ranking.
