Good corporate citizenship or rampant commercialism? Running an Olympic Games takes big bucks, and Big Business steps up with the money in exchange for exclusive rights.

An Olympics Games is a massive endeavor requiring a tremendous investment in goods and services. The estimated $2 to $4 billion required for Vancouver 2010 has come largely from government and corporate sponsorship.

"The Olympic Winter Games could not happen without Olympic sponsors. In addition to the direct revenue generated by sponsors, each sponsor’s products, technology and expertise are vital to the success of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, " notes VANOC on their Sponsors and Partners page.

Levels of Corporate Sponsorship to Olympic Games

The Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) has worked for years to encourage and solicit corporate sponsors. To this end, there are four classes of sponsorship of the 2010 Games with various levels of financial support:

  • World-Wide Olympic Partners (TOP) in The Olympic Partner program – International corporations that support the Games in many countries with a commitment over several years.
  • National Partners – Sponsors in the host country who strongly support a local Olympics
  • Official Supporters – Corporations usually with a branch in the host country
  • Official Suppliers – Provide specific products or services at one or more Games.

Official Suppliers to Vancouver 2010 Get Marketing Rights

"Official Suppliers" are corporate sponsors who provide designated products or services to the 2010 Winter Games and in exchange receive exclusive marketing rights. For convenience, they are grouped here into different areas (this is not an official classification).

  • General Mills – Cereal and unprepared grocery products
  • Hain Celestial Canada – Natural and organic packaged grocery products
  • Saputo – Packaged dairy products
  • Weston Bakeries – Bread and baked goods
  • Wrigley Canada – Confectionery products (candy & gum)

Official Suppliers to Vancouver 2010: Hospitality

The "official" designation means that official 2010 Winter Games venues will serve only Coca-Cola (a TOP provider), Molson and Vincor products at hospitality locations.

  • Jackson-Triggs Estate Wines – Vincor Canada provided wine for hospitality rooms.
  • Karl's Event Central – Supply, distribution and management of frame and pole tents
  • Molson – Beer for hospitality functions in specific designated areas.

  • Aquilini Investment Group – Handles venue agreements in the “diversified development product/service category”
  • Deloitte – Professional accounting and other financial services

Providers of Computing Services

There are bigger names (Atos Origin, Acer) in the upper echelons of sponsorship. It's hard to envision how two different server vendors could both have "exclusive" rights.

  • Nortel – Converged Network Equipment, servers.
  • Sun Microsystems – Computer Network Server Supplier

Official Suppliers – Other

  • 3M – Large Format Graphics (Building and Vehicle Wraps)
  • Offsetters - “Official Carbon Offsetter” provides offsets against carbon oxides generated by Games construction and operation.
  • Port Metro Vancouver – Port services and space for the Press Center at the Canada Place waterfront
  • Purolator – Courier and distribution services
  • Tickets.com – Ticket services
  • YVR Vancouver Airport Authority – Airport services (“First time in the history of the Olympic Games that an airport has been named an Official Supplier,” says VANOC)
  • Workopolis – Recruitment services for staff and volunteers

For the 2010 games it appears that official sponsorship continues to be a large variable in the financial formula. These official suppliers receive exclusive rights for their products and services to be used at the games.
