Once you get your feet wet into affiliate marketing, it is addictive! It is a great little side business to have, and helps your understanding of other markets as well.
For the second part in my series of articles on affiliate marketing, we will go beyond the basics and provide some "tips and tricks" to make you more successful.
First of all, be sure to monitor your ads every day. Make sure you know which ones are performing, and which ones aren't. Give an ad at least five days, but if you don't see anything coming from it be ready to can it. The marketers who are attached to their ads are the ones who lose money in this business.
Next, take a hard look at your ads. Cutesy titles and catchy phrases may work elsewhere, but not in search engine affiliate marketing. Your ads come up when people search on specific words and phrases - so it stands to reason that you have to be specific, factual, and to the point. I often run two or three different ads in the same campaign for the same product. Google will then run the better ones more often, and I delete the "dogs".
Also, pay close attention to your keywords. If they are not specific enough, you will get an email from Google telling you that they are " Not qualified for search". They will ask you to either up your bid for the keyword or delete it. Most of the time, I delete them as they are not pulling in the kind of traffic I am looking for.
When you are making your keyword lists, make sure to include common mispellings of words - these are usually purchased for cheaper rates and many people make spelling mistakes while searching. I use tolls for my tool company affilate ads, for example.
As I mentioned in a recent blog, Google now allows you to use site-targeted ads as well. You can pick and choose which sites you want you ads to run on, and monitor the stats so you can eliminate dogs and tire kickers here as well.
A common mistake many affiliates make is in not using exact match keywords for keyword based ads. To do this, place your phrase in brackets, like this [Christmas gift wrap]. If you don't have exact match, your ad can come up if they search for Christmas, gift, or wrap. This gives you unneeded impressions, and once again, tire kickers!
A great keywords generator that helps with new keyword ideas can be found at www.goodkeywords.com They have a free version that is well worth the download, and always helps me to expand my list. This software also generates common mispellings, which is very useful.
Start out with a long list of keywords, but be sure to prune them over time to a target of ten. This way, you are focused on the areas that bring you the most revenue.
Don't just stick with Google, if you have a blog - make sure to embed affiliate links into the text of your blogs and stick pertinent ads into the sides of your blog along the text. If you have a website, the same logic applies.
Affiliate marketing is like working a great crossword puzzle, it is not easy, but it is very satisfying. Good luck, and have fun!
