The latest and greatest venue for advertisers is the so-called "third screen", the small screen on each of our mobile phones.
Mobile phones are with their owners for many more hours of the day than TV sets, magazines, or radios - this is why ads over mobile phones have become such a "hot" new topic. TV over your phone is a brand new concept, and is now enjoyed by Verizon V-cast subscribers in select markets, and Amp'ed Mobile subscribers. This market is primarily young, and affluent - perfect for many of the new and exciting products that ad agencies are busy developing mobile ads to feature. The mobile phone ad market is a very different market than any other, and the first attempts to use it for advertising failed for one reason - they tried to leverage the same content used on either television or PCs. The most important thing to take into account when designing mobile ads is that the screen is tiny - any content you want viewed will have to be viewable and quickly over this smaller screen. The second reason early attempts were unsuccessful were because they assumed mobile viewers would be just like TV viewers - glued to their screens. Mobile viewers actually are "on the go" and want to get as much information as possible in as short a time as possible. They want small, quick, soundbytes of info so they can glance at their phones and know all that you have to say in about 30 seconds or less. Technology site GigaOm lists many new startups that are focusing on making mobile ads happen, and as an Amp'd mobile customer, I can attest that some are running on my phone. These newer ads look great on my small screen, and are quick and crisp. Why weren't the TV ads so quick and crisp? I will admit to watching my phone while sitting at red lights, and I'll bet others are too! If you have a fun, youth-oriented product, you can't afford NOT to jump into mobile advertising.
