Many small business owners are unsure of how to market their business online.

Email Marketing has received a bad reputation over the years. Just as there are "white hat" SEO strategies and "black hat" SEO strategies, there are also good and bad email marketing strategies. In no way is this article promoting spamming. It's important to know the difference between online marketing and spamming.

Small Business Email Marketing

Email marketing is an effective way to attract potential customers if it is done correctly. Email marketing can be difficult for small business owners, in terms of knowing how often to send newsletters, gaining leads, finding services that fit the business budget and other factors pertaining to marketing in general. Fortunately, there is a way to use email marketing to a small business' advantage and avoid scams and other financial hazards on the internet.

When using email marketing, it’s essential to figure out a target audience before even making up a draft for a newsletter. Find out what specific demographic would be interested in buying the products or services offered. For instance, if someone creates hand-made bead bracelets they may want to target girls from ages 3-19. On the other hand, it may be difficult to find a target audiences if selling products that are applicable to anyone, such as used electronics.

When selling general products or services, it’s best to focus on one specific aspect of the business and market that. Then customers who are looking for something specific will see that there are other products and services available and may come back when they need something else. For instance, a freelance writer who does SEO content, grant writing, and college essays would market the most popular service.

Marketing Help for Small Businesses

Many online business owners wonder how often it is appropriate to send out newsletters, a popular form of email marketing. Avoid having the company's primary email address placed on a blacklist or emails ending up in spam folders. For this reason, it’s best to send newsletters weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. It’s also equally important to find a newsletter service that is reputable as bad services will cause a loss in revenue and clients because newsletters will end up in spam folders.

It’s best to hire a web designer to create newsletter templates. Also, only send newsletters to clients that have already done business with the company. Make sure that the newsletter layout will vary each time as using the same template over and over can cause customers to leave because they’ll become bored with it.

Always include current specials in the newsletters and make sure to offer discounts and promotional deals regularly. When using email marketing to seek new customers, be sure to proceed cautiously as unsolicited email is usually marked as spam. One way to avoid this is by having a button on the company website that allows people to sign up for the newsletter. Be cautious when purchasing leads as some companies will overcharge. Also, the way that they come about these leads isn’t always legal or ethical.

Determining a Small Business Budget

One critical issue pertaining to small business advertising, including email marketing, is budget. It's important to find a service that isn't a complete scam. The easiest way is to join a professional online community, such as LinkedIn, and ask other business owners who use email marketing what service they are using. A search engine can be used to research various companies.
